Fact: the Austria scenery is lush. Reason: Plentiful rain(!)
Rain, rain & more rain today - I think we may have had our quota of sun now, hey ho. Earlier in the week we had the sunshine and I doubt anyone would disagree that the mountains still look spectacular in the mist.
Last night's Tyrolean evening was very entertaining - in a curious way?! We were treated to a traditional show of Austrian dances, lederhosen, yodelling and thigh slapping.
Well done to our adults who joined in with the dancing on stage, they were all great sports! One of Stanzach's Village Leaders, Danny, then led the singing with a willing Jeka Rep on stage. The finale must've had our Risk Manager, Alan, on his feet: four axe-wielding Austrians chopping and sawing a tree trunk with the Cubs and Scouts in the front rows excitedly catching pieces of wood as they pinged off! I struggle to find words here.... 'incredible' seems appropriate :-)
Today's Community Project returned to the flood plains to clear rubbish to protect the local environment and wildlife. As a bonus the young people were encouraged to go up to the top of the observation tower, where they could see amazing views of the whole of the Nature Park. Although this project has been referred to as Community Service by some of our keen teenagers(!), this has been so well appreciated by the local volunteers and it is fantastic that our young people have given a little back to the local Austrian Community.
Having fun in new and unique ways is what this trip is all about. Today some of our young people were treated to a 2 mile down hill alpine coaster ride. What's that? I hear you say. Well imagine the Barclays advert with the giant slide. It's similar to that but a real life massive version down the side of the mountain in small kart! A truely unique and fun way to see the Austrian scenery.
Thank you for all of your kind wishes and comments, we are are passing these round to all the houses daily!

Message from Emily, 4th East Barnet: I'm having an amazing time here in Austria! Even though the weather has been horrific at times, it is still beautiful, with the puffy clouds intertwining between the mountains. I've made loads of new friends and grown much closer to the people in my Scout/Explorer unit. Thank you to all the leaders! Emily x
Message for Andrew, Tom and Alex 3rd Orpington - Cant wait to see the photos displayed at the AGM next year - hope you guys have got some good ones of Akela as well!! Weather just as nasty here so you are not missing much - but you are having so much more fun than we are! Enjoy your last few days and safe journey back. Lots of love, Jeannie (Great Jerboa) xxx
Hi to all the parents + partners of 2nd, 3rd Orpington & Crofton Oak:
All the kids are well. We had a wet day yesterday, but spirits are still high. The two day hikers returned very tired and wet, but full of tales of brilliant views and some very steep slopes to walk up.
The Alpine Coaster was amazing, as was the rafting – made even better by Andrew (Akela @3rd) stacking it when running across the river! We went to the Austria Party last night which encouraged some of them to have a wash and put some clean clothes on!
Special Message for Harry’s mum – he has now found his wash kit but we can’t vouch that it's been used!
Alex Fallon has been adopted by many of the young ladies as their “little brother”. They seem to love his hair ;-)
Callum, Tom P, David + Charlie seem to have the tidiest room (parents take note!), which is more than can be said for the Scouts in the other room.
Tom K was an excellent waiter when we had our brilliant village leaders Alf, Danny and Emma to dinner and David & Charlie made some brilliant pancakes.
The loudest snorer competition is quite closely followed by one of the Explorers we are sharing our house with James + Sam have been quite normal – well as normal as Scouts on camp can be.
We are all not looking forward to the end of our adventure. We’ll see you all on Sunday morning.
Hello Danielle and George 6th Erith and everyone else. Glad to see your all still having fun, cant wait to hear all about it and see all the photos!( hope you two have remembered you have cameras, if not go and use them now LOL). Love Mum,Dad,Steve,Milly + Harry XxX

To: Skip & Rikki (21st Br) The neighbours want some info on Silent Disco, as I had one that wasn't! It was good fun until the Police arrived. Couldn't get on with that new BBQ you bought Dad. Still the Fire Brigade were here in four minutes. When you return try not to trip over all that blue and white tape the Police left everywhere. Love, Will.
To: Tommy & Kate (15th PW) Hi kids! We've moved house while you were away. As you are intrepid explorers now we thought you would like to work out your new address. lol Mum & Dad.
To Jim (staff). Good news, Jim. I've found your Passport. Bit late to post it to you, don't you think? I'm told it's much harder to get back into this country than to leave, so if there's a long Q at Calais you'll all know who to blame! Love M xxx
Seriously Guys, cherish new friendships, bring home a wealth of memories (some in jpeg format, please), and leave behind just your thanks. Bless you all.
Hi Drew (or anyone from 16th Erith). I think they left you all up the mountain on Monday as we have not heard a word from any of you. We also went on a chairlift which went 1,800ft high.
Really tired........yawn zzzz.
Bye bye,
Dominic
Message from Osh:
ReplyDeleteWell, the rafting was really fun. I got soaked. The mountain walking was strenuous, not sure I'll be doing it when we are in France. I can't find my PJs but I will probably find them soon...
The journey here was long but I tried to make it fun.
Make space for souvenirs!

Message from Mel & George:
ReplyDeleteTo Richard, Liam & Tom,
Sorry it's taken a long time to reply, it's been very active up to now!
We've done rafting which was good fun, been up a mountain & back down again in the rain! We've been eating plenty of chocolate to keep our energy up :-)
We're looking forward to seeing you all.
Lots of love Mel & George xxx
To Jack & Tom Beasley,
ReplyDeleteI'm really missing you and wish I could have come with you but at least I'm getting the TV controls to myself.
I made some friends on holiday called Taya & Kiera but they went home today.
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday
Love Molly xx
Message from Jonathan, Crofton oak:
ReplyDeleteHello Mum, Dad & Eleanor,
I am keeping safe and taking lots of phtos of the mountains.
I went canyoning which was brilliant but I got a couple of blisters on my hands, I've been playing monopoly in my spare time. James, my new friend Alex and me went with the group on the two day hike which was great!
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday,
Love from Jonathan :-)
Message from Amy, 4th East Barnet:
ReplyDeleteTo anyone who cares :) (since all my family are here but not exactly with me).
It's amazing! We've made so many new friends (even if most of them are rather cheeky!)
All the activities have been incredible, I think I've screamed and laughed more than I've spoken this week!
None of us want to leave! DON'T MAKE US GO HOME! ;)
Amy.
Message from Emily, 4th East Barnet:
ReplyDeleteI'm having an amazing time here in Austria!
ReplyDeleteHi to all the parents + partners of 2nd, 3rd Orpington & Crofton Oak:
ReplyDeleteAll the kids are well.
Debbie, Pauline, Simon and Andew

Been asked to forward a few messages from home.
ReplyDeleteTo: Akela (aka Mum) - was I supposed to turn off the bathtap you left running, last Friday? Ian xx
Hi Nathan and the rest of 3rd Hastings.
ReplyDeleteI hope you all have a fab last day and travel home safe. Were all missing you tons Nathan and can't wait to see you.
Love Mum, Peter and Hermione xxxxx
Hi Drew (or anyone from 16th Erith). I think they left you all up the mountain on Monday as we have not heard a word from any of you. Still, I expect by Sunday evening, I will be telling you to stop talking again. Anyway, the Tyrolean evening looked great fun - bet you had a laugh! Pity about the rain today, your suntan will have to wait until Devon now (hopefully!!!). Enjoy the last day and I will see you bright and early on Sunday (yawn!!!)
